The Adelaide studio of international architecture, design, landscape architecture and urban planning firm, HASSELL, is celebrating its success at the State’s top architecture awards.

The Adelaide Oval Western Grandstand Redevelopment was awarded an Architecture Award for Public Architecture, at Friday evening’s (10 June 2011) Australian Institute of Architects South Australia Architecture Awards, held at the National Wine Centre.

Chris Watkins, HASSELL Principal Architect and Project Director said the $116.6 million Western Grandstand was recognised for its bold design, seamless integration and preservation of heritage.

“This award is testament to the collaborative approach employed by the South Australian Cricket Association (SACA), HASSELL and the project partners,” said Mr Watkins.

“The Western Grandstand is truly a world-class sporting facility and represents the many high quality design and architecture projects that continue to flourish in South Australia.”

Alun Chapman, HASSELL’s Principal of Urban Design, said to receive this prestigious award was an outstanding honour, not only for the HASSELL team but for SACA and the other project partners, particularly as they are gifted by industry peers.

“HASSELL is committed to leading the way to find new and innovative design solutions that meet the changing needs of our communities, and the Western Grandstand clearly demonstrates this,” Mr Chapman said.

“Our design-lead approach, in collaboration with our clients and project partners, has enabled us to deliver outstanding places, including the 6 Star Green Star Rated SA Water building and internationally acclaimed Adelaide Zoo.

“We are immensely proud that this approach continues to be acknowledged and applauded within the state and look forward to the national awards.”
