Melbourne Opera is pleased to announce its next new production, Gounod's ever popular "Faust", which returns to Melbourne on June 18 after a long absence, the last production having been given by the VSO in the early 90's.

Following the sell-out success of "The Merry Widow" in March, Melbourne Opera has assembled a first class cast; Steven Gallop plays Mephistopheles, a role in which he has been acclaimed in several productions in the US, popular tenor David Rogers-Smith debuts as Faust and Green Room nominee Danielle Calder is Marguerite with leading baritone Phillip Calcagno just returned from performances in Singapore, singing Valentin.

The production is celebrating the sesqui-centenary of the birth of Dame Nellie Melba: Marguerite was one of Melba's most famous roles and Gounod himself coached her in the part.

"Faust" was for many years one of the most popular operas in the repertoire and it is easy to understand why - the score is packed with well-known arias and choruses, including Marguerite's famous "Jewel” Song, Mephistopheles “Serenade”, Faust's "Salut demeure" and Valentin's "Even Bravest Hearts may swell"/”The Soldier's Chorus” and the famous Waltz remain staples of choruses throughout the world.

"Faust" tells the story of Faust's pact with the Devil to regain lost youth. The object of his love, the innocent Marguerite, is destroyed by her affair with Faust although achieves ultimate salvation in the famous and moving Apotheosis Trio which concludes the opera so impressively.

Melbourne Opera's Director of Productions Hugh Halliday directs the opera, an opera which he produced with great success internationally, and the Melbourne Opera Chorus and Orchestra are conducted by Greg Hocking.
