World Environment Day on Sunday June 5 marks the launch of planting season at Lake Alexandrina. This year, 220,000 seedlings will be planted by Coorong and Lakes Alexandrina and Albert communities and volunteers as part of ongoing efforts to help restore resilience to this region’s fragile environment.

icare communities, an Adelaide-based volunteer engagement program of the River Murray Urban Users, is supporting communities in regional areas, but needs your help. icare communities is placing an urgent call for volunteer assistance to help planting efforts on June 5 and for several other related events. The need for extra volunteer support is crucial as the scale of this year’s community re-vegetation efforts will be the largest since the project commenced in 2009.

All contributions play a valuable role in ensuring the success of the Lower Lakes Bioremediation and Revegetation Project and the regions long term plan, both designed to protect biodiversity and maintain and re-establish ecosystem function.

The planting season launch will be held between 9.30am to 3.30pm at the Clayton Bay foreshore. It’s set to be a great fun family day with lunch available, talks from local experts and loads of great community spirit. Bus transportation to the site, departing from the Adelaide Bus Station at 8.30am, is also available for the first 50 people who register. Representatives from icare communities, Lakes Hub, Goolwa to Wellington Local Action Planning Association and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources will be in attendance to provide information on this venture and other exciting community environmental projects.

Event registration for June 5 at Clayton Bay is essential for catering purposes.

icare communities

icare communities, an Adelaide-based volunteer engagement program of the River Murray Urban Users, brings together urban and rural communities to address our most urgent environmental challenges. Our project provides an online community hub (interactive website and social media) that allows users and members to easily locate a wide variety of volunteer opportunities via a constantly updated event calendar. Users can post photos and videos, share stories and provide feedback on their experiences to help improve and evolve volunteer engagement and retention. The service provides environmental managers and groups from around the state with 'best practice' tools for event management and volunteer engagement as well as a platform to advertise and promote latest environmental news, projects and events.
