Mike Pritchard has released a useful new book for carers of parents with Alzheimer’s disease. “Fading From Memory” provides helpful insight and inspiration to families dealing with dementia.

“Fading From Memory: what happens to a family when both parents have Alzheimer’s?” is a timely and useful addition to the literature of aging and dementia – issues now pressing on many baby-boomer families as their parents slip into old age.

The book is written in the form of a journal that follows the slow unravelling of Pritchard’s parents’ lives, meticulously detailed with insight, compassion and humour. No part of the subject is taboo; the author takes a frank and perceptive view of the indignities and pressures of Alzheimer’s disease, offering deep and original insights into his parent’s failing minds, and giving an honest appraisal of his own abilities and limitations in dealing with their situation.

The book is full of practical steps such as dealing with the social services, setting up a monitoring camera, organising house modifications, accepting changes of responsibility, and soothing minds troubled by irrational fears and suspicions.

Pritchard paints a realistic and sobering picture of dementia, but he has an unfailingly good eye for its moments of humour, which are described in a laconic literary voice of some talent. At times, the scenes he describes are heartbreakingly sad, always vivid and highly memorable. Not only is “Fading From Memory” a book that all Alzheimer’s carers should read for insight and an intimation of things to come, but it is also a poignant and inspiring reminder of how fleeting and valuable is our time together, and how each moment is to be treasured.

“Fading From Memory: what happens to a family when both parents have Alzheimer’s?” is now available from Amazon.com in both paperback and Kindle formats. ISBN: 1456345982, 472 pp, 8.5 x 5.5 x 1.2 inches. The book is also available from Barnes & Noble, Abebooks and other resellers.
