In a move which promises to provide greater autonomy to both educators and students, Monash University has selected open-source Learning Management System (LMS) Moodle 2.0 as their new Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) platform and leading Australian Moodle Partner NetSpot as their services provider.

A 5 year strategic initiative, the VLE will integrate innovative learning and teaching tools with the Moodle platform; including the Google Apps for Education Suite (email, calendar, sites, groups and chat), MeTL (an inking software for tablet PCs that was developed by Monash University’s own eEducation Centre) and an ePortfolio tool. One of the key features of the Monash VLE is the priority that it places on staff and student engagement: over five year’s worth of helpdesk data has given Monash the edge it needs to ensure that its Moodle will be the most usable in the sector.

For Monash University Pro Vice-Chancellor (Learning and Teaching), Marnie Hughes-Warrington, the move to Moodle 2.0 is part of the University’s wider vision of e-learning in which the dynamic connection of staff and students is paramount.

"For us, leadership in e-learning means usability and technology for creating learning relationships", she said.

Australia is currently leading the world in the roll out of the new Moodle 2.0 platform, with NetSpot being the first and only major Moodle Partner globally to support Moodle 2.0 enterprise-wide for institutions who want to take advantage of the next generation architecture.

Martin Dougiamas, the founder and lead developer of Moodle, said "It's tremendously exciting to see Monash University joining the ranks of leading institutions that are choosing to base their core teaching and learning operations on a Moodle 2.0 platform, and particularly that they have chosen one of our leading Moodle Partners, NetSpot, to help them with the configuration and transition, as well as ongoing support. I look forward to a long association with Monash as part of our world-wide community."
