NetSpot Pty Ltd will assist Flinders University in their move to the open-source learning management system (LMS) Moodle for start of Semester 1, 2012. The move is an important upgrade to their existing Flinders Learning Online (FLO) environment, which currently integrates a variety of products including a suite of applications that have been developed internally by the university. The move also means that Flinders University joins the ranks of several leading Australian universities committed to moving to the recently released Moodle 2.0 with support from NetSpot.

Following an extensive 18-month evaluation process, which included input from both staff and students at Flinders, Moodle 2.0 was selected as the replacement for the university’s existing LMS, Blackboard Vista, as this product was soon to be retired.

Stated reasons for the university’s decision to move to Moodle included; Moodle’s provision of more educationally beneficial tools, its scope for collaborating with other institutions, its flexibility in browser support, and the fact that the software is open-source means that Flinders will have more control over the product, and therefore their use of the product into the future.

Along with their selection of Moodle, NetSpot is proud to have been chosen by Flinders as their professional services provider, delivering services which include training, content migration, integration with existing student systems and enterprise-level managed hosting of the new environment.

The Executive Director, ICT Strategy at Flinders University, Professor Colin Carati said "The decision to adopt Moodle as our LMS is very exciting. Given their experience in Moodle implementations, we feel that working with NetSpot will enhance our ability to adapt our LMS implementation to the business needs of the university. This will give our students and staff access to a leading online environment with enhanced support for innovative learning. We look forward to working with NetSpot to achieve these goals."

Martin Dougiamas, the founder and lead developer of Moodle, said, "It's tremendously exciting to see another university joining the ranks of leading institutions that are choosing to base their core teaching and learning operations on a Moodle 2.0 platform, and particularly that they have chosen one of our leading Moodle Partners, NetSpot, to help them with the configuration and transition, as well as ongoing support."
