Australian organic skincare company Y natural today said health authorities and cosmetics companies could face ethical challenges if they refused to support legislation for cosmetic labelling that highlights toxic ingredients.

The company was responding to an announcement by Adelaide Women’s and Children’s Hospital head of dermatology, Dr Lachlan Warren, which raised awareness of toxic chemicals in children’s cosmetics.

Dr Warren warned that the boom in cosmetic products for children could lead to future allergy problems because of the high levels of preservatives, perfumes and other problem ingredients.

This follows an announcement late last year by France’s Minister for Health, Madame Roselyne Bachelot, of her plans to introduce a logo for French products containing the same chemical groups that Dr Warren is now warning people against.

Y natural director and spokesperson Barbara Gare said, "The proposed logo in France is to designate that a product is not recommended for use by pregnant or breastfeeding women, babies and young children."

Ms Gare pointed out that the French spend over $14 billion a year on skincare. “To risk the inevitable financial backlash shows that France is taking the problem very seriously indeed.”

The French singled out chemicals in the paraben and phthalates families due to their possible link to deformities and cancers. Dr Warren said that there are many ingredients that promote allergies and other serious health problems.

"Y natural would like to see the Australian Government adopt the same approach to challenging the current labelling standards – but take the leadership position by raising the standards even further," said Ms Gare.

“Not only would this protect the Australian public, but it would see Australian products well placed to fill the global market desire for high-quality products that don’t need health warning.”

Y natural will host a FREE public workshop on Ingredients to Avoid in Adelaide on Wednesday 6 May 2009, 6-8pm. For details email [email protected] or call Y natural on 08 8272 5409.

Both doctors and skincare specialists are concerned at high levels of toxic chemicals in cosmetics, but are Australian health authorities doing enough to combat the issue?
