Perth, Western Australia, 12 February 2009 – Internet Service Provider (ISP) Highway 1 has been approved by the Department of the Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy (DBCDE), to participate in the ISP Internet Level Content Filtering Pilot (the Pilot).

The Pilot is an Australian government initiative aimed to test and assess the impact ISP content filtering has on ISPs and their customers. The outcomes of the Pilot will inform the Government’s approach on ISP filtering.
General Manager of Highway 1, Nicholas Power said, “Participating in the Pilot will allow Highway 1 to assess the technical aspects of filtering solutions and examine the positive and negative effect ISP content filtering will have on Highway 1 and on our customers.”

“We see benefits for our customers, most of who are small businesses. Businesses are always looking for ISPs who can manage internet usage and reduce the amount of unwanted content that appears on the internet while they are using it. This funded trial gives us an opportunity to investigate such technology.” Mr. Power said.

Furthermore, “This Pilot will allow us to be actively involved in the evaluation process of ISP content filtering. I believe that the best avenue for an ISP to meaningfully contribute to the current clean feed debate is to participate in the trial process. We would rather be on the inside seeing how this kind of technology affects our service than relying on a third party telling us how it will perform.” Mr. Power said.

Commencing in early 2009, Highway 1 customers who have ADSL, ADSL2+, SHDSL or Ethernet services can volunteer to participate in the Pilot. Highway 1 customers who wish to participate in the pilot can email [email protected]

Customers will be asked to complete surveys issued by the DBCDE during the Pilot. All participants in the Pilot remain anonymous and will not have their internet use monitored or tracked. There is also no fee to participate.
