Retired barrister, Cedric Hampson is no stranger to shady characters and the murky worlds they inhabit. The Brisbane-based author brings to life a cast of miscreants and deviants in his novels, weaving their traits into the rich tapestry of the situations in which they find themselves.

“My books are influenced by the events I have witnessed and the characters I have met. It may be, however, that it is only on rereading what one has written that one recognises them as old acquaintances,” says Mr Hampson.

A Queen’s Counsel of 34 years, Mr Hampson is the author of five novels.

Experience gives him a unique perspective on morality and it’s many nuances.

Since retiring from law, Cedric Hampson has devoted himself to writing. His first novel, Shifting Shadows was published in 1999.

While his legal background has offered up a variety of characters and stories to tell, the barrister admits he initially found it difficult to switch from legalese to creative prose.

“The great problem was to forget the legal style of writing that I had learned over the decades. Its objective is to write clearly, admitting of only one meaning. The writer of fiction writes more loosely, encouraging his reader’s imagination to play,” says Mr Hampson.

Cedric Hampson is currently working on a book of 20 short stories.
