After six months of strenuous training, 48 committed riders and their dedicated support teams are almost ready to embark on the Hawaiian Ride for Youth (R4Y), an arduous bike riding adventure from Albany to Perth to raise money to help save West Australian youth at risk from suicide, depression or self harm.
The ride began in 2003 when a small group of riders, with children of their own, decided to combine their resources and skills to raise money to assist Youth Focus. Knowing that each and every teenage suicide affect hundreds of people, families, friends, neighbors, teachers and school friends, the riders felt this issue was a concern the whole community needed to address.
R4Y is held annually over five days and travels from Albany to Perth covering approximately 640km. On their journey the riders stop at a number of schools to engage with students in the issues associated with suicide, depression and self harm and the services and support Youth Focus offers free of charge.
The R4Y is Youth Focus’ largest fundraising event raising a massive $797,000 from last years ride and over $4 million since its inception.
Youth Focus is an independent West Australian non profit community based organisation working with young people between 12-18 years of age who are showing early signs associated with suicide, depression and self harm.
Suicide is the leading cause of death among young people, second only to major vehicle accidents. Support is so important in spreading awareness of the mental health issues of our young and the free of charge services that Youth Focus provides to help.
