13CABS IT Team took out an award for its successful iPhone app at the inaugural Optus Ultimate IT Challenge Competition, which recognised and rewarded innovation and teamwork in IT. 13CABS was one of three winners in the SMB category, which were announced at the Optus Business Innovations Awards ceremony hosted in Melbourne last week.

13CABS’ iPhone app has enjoyed over 150,000 downloads from the app store and has remained close to the top 10 free travel apps for the last 11 months.

By streamlining the booking process and making taxi travel safer for passengers and Drivers, 13CABS has established its profile as industry leader and innovator.

Sharing first prize with 13CABS in the Small and Medium Business category were FareShare, a Victorian based charity providing meals for the needy and VoIP medical software developer Aspedia from Queensland.

13CABS’ award is based upon the app enabling users to book taxis directly from their iPhone. The 13CABS app has extended functionality allowing users to book from their location via the iPhone’s built-in GPS and even to track the location of their cab via Google Maps. The app also integrates seamlessly with website.

“13CABS IT Team built the app in-house from the ground up to make the booking process simpler for passengers ensuring their experience with 13CABS is safe and positive. Being first to market with a feature-rich taxi booking app that’s free demonstrates 13CABS is taking an innovative approach to delivering superior services to passengers,” – it’s a game-changer for the Australian taxi industry,” said 13CABS Client Services Manager Simon Purssey.

Optus launched the Ultimate IT Challenge Competition to celebrate innovation and teamwork amongst IT teams across Australia. IT teams had to demonstrate how they overcame their biggest IT challenge, with the winners judged by a panel of IT experts.

The competition finalists also competed in the ultimate sports challenge on 11 February 2011 against some of Australia’s biggest sporting names, including Chris Judd, Stirling Mortlock, Matt Giteau and Alicia Molik.

Purssey suggested there may be further functionality added to the award winning app in coming months but isn't giving anything away just yet.
