A one-day international gathering of digital thought leaders incorporating Media2011 presented by Fairfax Media in association with X Media Lab - Thursday 3 March 2011, Doltone House, Sydney

Sydney, January 28, 2011 – US internet freedom advocate Tim Wu has confirmed he will speak at Australia's foremost conference of international digital thought leaders, Digital Directions, on March 3, 2011.

Wu is best known for coining the term 'network neutrality' and for being an advocate of media freedom. His work has addressed the increasing loss of freedom of the internet due to the fight between powerful organisations to "control the nature of competition itself", including controversially pitching Apple versus Google as an example of how the digital oligarchy battles to achieve power over media platforms.

With activists, commercial interests, organisations and politicians battling for control of information on the internet, never has there been a better time to look at the hot topic of digital monopoly with the world's leading commentator.

Wu's 2010 book, The Master Switch: The Rise and Fall of Information Empires has been praised by The New Yorker, Fortune Magazine, The Washington Post and on as one of 2010's best books. As a speaker, he brings insights into the increasingly complex areas of intellectual property, censorship and telecommunications policy.

Other confirmed speakers include Safdar Mustafa of news network Al Jazeera, Baratunde Thurston from satirical website The Onion, and Vanessa Fox, creator of Google’s Webmaster Central and author of Marketing in the Age of Google.

Digital Directions will be held in Sydney on March 3, 2011. See for further details.
