Steady growth in outsourcing of software development in 2010 by Australian companies is in line with global trends according to Bali-based software company, Mitrais.

“In 2010 we were engaged by 32 new Australian clients,” Mitrais CEO David Magson said.

“This brings to more than 60 the number of Australian companies we undertook development projects for during the year. It represents good growth in the acceptance of outsourcing software development, even though growth is yet to return to the levels which preceded the global financial crisis,” Mr. Magson said.

He predicts growth will accelerate this year due to increasing shortages of IT staff and tighter budgets.

“Feedback from clients is that accurate estimates of projects, underpinned by excellent project management and coding, are pre-requisites to the market continuing to grow,” Mr. Magson said.

The preferred method of engaging Mitrais services in more than 50 percent of projects was seat outsourcing followed by time and materials engagements at 30 percent. In seat outsourcing Mitrais software engineers based in Bali are engaged and managed as an extension of the clients’ own Australian-based software development team.

Commenting on one project, the managing consultant for a large Australian software company said “the Mitrais team has mostly worked remotely from the project location, but despite this, very complex issues have been worked through successfully together.”

IT companies in Queensland and NSW account for 80 percent of new business secured by Mitrais during 2010.

Mr. Magson said the majority of these organizations sell an information system as part of offering broader solutions to specific vertical markets such as education, or mining for example. Others had immediate needs to upgrade legacy systems to improve how they managed their business processes as they emerged from the effects of the financial crisis.
