The Textile, Clothing and Footwear Resource Centre of WA (TCFWA) is seeking 'free' space in Belmont to house a container load of sewing materials before they are shipped to Ormoc for community projects.

In 2007, the Textile, Clothing and Footwear Resource Centre of WA Inc. (TCFWA) along with the Business and Professional Women’s Clubs of Belmont & Western Australia (BPW) and the Matilda Bay Rotary Club started the TCF Ormoc sewing project located in the Philippines.

The international sewing project encourages and assists Ormoc men and women to start their own sewing business in their local communities. They are able to utilise donated sewing machines, material and other sewing items from TCFWA to create evening wear, children’s’ wear, uniforms, home wares and any other items they dream of.

The Textile, Clothing and Footwear Resource Centre of WA (TCFWA) has previously sent 2 sea-container loads of pre-loved sewing machines totalling 280 machines, textiles and hundreds of cartons of sewing haberdashery to Ormoc and its surrounding villages. The project has recently grown from 21 community sewing centres to 25, and 8 more are expected to commence shortly. More than 250 locals are now a part of the project.

Carol Hanlon, Manager of TCF WA and the TCF Ormoc Project said, “The support from the local community has been fantastic, and we want to welcome donations of even more sewing items. However, we need to find some additional storage space immediately”.

“Our aim is to send a sea container of donated items every 12 months, and then provide business skills workshops in the Ormoc community when the goods arrive. Along with storage space, we are also seeking a sponsor to help with shipping and logistical costs which total around $4,000 per shipment”.

Carol will also be volunteering for one week at TCF Ormoc, Philippines during January 2011 to assist with the ongoing business training and the staging of the 3rd Ormoc Fashion Festival.
