Australia - 2 December, 2010: With the festive season upon us, more Australians than ever will be shunning long lines, parking chaos and early morning starts in favour of the blissful comfort of doing their Christmas shopping online. Whilst bricks and mortar retailers continue to predict poor Christmas sales, PayPal, the innovator in online payments, indicates that 2010 will be the biggest Christmas yet for Australian online retailers.

According to a recent report commissioned by PayPal, the Australian eCommerce market is set to reach AU$36.8 billion by 2013[1], with 2010 online sales peaking this Christmas. The unique combination of the continually strong Aussie dollar, the ever increasing number of Australian retailers that have expanded their offerings online in the last year and the growth in consumer confidence when shopping online, has created the ‘perfect storm’ for the success of online retail this Christmas.

Adrian Christie, PayPal spokesperson, said: “There is no doubt that the consumer-friendly climate has created a surge in online shopping. Developments of innovative technologies are also driving growth in online retail and we are seeing huge growth in the adoption of mobile commerce, enabling consumers to snap up those Christmas online bargains from the beach to the bar!”

Despite the strong Aussie dollar, Australians prefer to buy their festive wares from home grown retailers. According to a recent report from PayPal, nearly a quarter of consumers prefer to ‘buy Aussie’ and will only shop online at domestic websites. When Australians do turn to overseas shopping, PayPal research shows that a wider choice and selection of goods is the most considered factor, rather than price[2].

To make Australian online shopping even more convenient and cost-effective this Christmas, PayPal has teamed up with over 50 Australian online retailers to offer its customers free shipping[3] throughout the festive season. Consumers can take advantage of this offer at dozens of major retailers from JB Hi-Fi, to Bing Lee and General Pants.

Christie continued: “2010 is a great year for Australian online retailers and consumers are benefitting. PayPal Australia now has over 34,000 merchants signed up, offering its 3.5 million active users a wide and vast array of choice this Christmas.”

However, PayPal warns festive shoppers to take care when shopping online: “The golden rule for purchasing online is to treat every online shopping experience like you were shopping in-store and to take care of your personal details. Using a secure payment method such as PayPal, where you never have to share your personal details online with anyone, will guarantee that your personal details stay personal.”

To help consumers take advantage of online shopping this Christmas, PayPal has put together the some top tips – check out the top three below.

1. Shop around - Try multiple search engines and outlets, such as eBay, comparing savings and product range

2. Be aware - To ensure your items arrive in time for Christmas check the site’s delivery times and shipping costs
