It may seem counterintuitive to invest in leadership development when the higher education sector, like other sectors, is operating in uncertain times. It often takes something like an economic downturn, however, to realise that 'people are all we have'.

Two leading professional development providers for the tertiary education sector, the L H Martin Institute for Higher Education Leadership and Management and the Association for Tertiary Education Management (ATEM), are co-presenting Leadership Literacies for the Knowledge Era - a residential Leadership Masterclass to support senior academic and administrative leaders. It will be held from 10-12 February 2009 at the Deakin Management Centre, Geelong.

Masterclass participants will develop and improve their leadership literacies for the knowledge era. These are best defined as 'soft' skills and competencies that authentically draw on a leader's ability to:

  • know themselves and their people well,
  • build strong relationships, and
  • lead with vision and integrity.

Deceptively simple really, but focusing on values, beliefs and assumptions that underpin behaviour and results triggers the very self-awareness and resilience necessary for operating in complex and uncertain times.

L H Martin Institute for Higher Education Leadership and Management

The L H Martin Institute aims to improve the quality of post-secondary education management and governance. The Institute is interdisciplinary and has as its key objectives to:

  • train the next generation of leaders of Australia's higher education and VET institutions in the strategic management of their institutions,
  • provide a forum in which public policy makers, public and private sector institutions, and national and international experts can explore and assess the changing national and international environment of higher education and VET, and
  • support its educational programs with scholarship and research.

It does this by providing:

  • postgraduate coursework programs,
  • continuing professional education and refresher programs for aspiring and established senior executives and leaders and for members of governing bodies,
  • conferences and seminars on major policy and management issues, and
  • consultancy services to higher education and VET institutions.

Maintaining investment in leadership development is a key to navigating through uncertain times.
