The company that installed solar panels on the heritage listed roof of the Sydney Town Hall won the top energy efficiency award in Australia at the annual electrical industry Excellence Awards hosted by peak electrical industry body the National Electrical and Communications Association (NECA).

Stowe Australia received the top award in front over 500 industry representatives including electrical contractors, educators and government representatives at the annual gala event of the electrical and communications industry at Star City in Sydney.

The City of Sydney leads by example with its Sustainable Sydney 2030 vision, and as part of this initiative, the Sydney Town Hall sought a solution to improve its environmental and energy efficiency footprint.

NECA’s Chief executive officer, Mr James Tinslay, said the team at Stowe Australia were awarded the top prize because they had to solve a complex design problem while preserving the look and feel of the Sydney Town Hall to ensure its heritage status was not impacted.

“This project was just phenomenal. It required the integration of many systems and the final result is a credit to the team at Stowe Australia,” Mr Tinslay said.

“A key factor in winning the project was Stowe Australia’s solution for an appropriate mounting system on the building’s heritage roof and the finished product is simply outstanding. This is a classic example of how new technology can be used appropriately on older buildings to improve their energy efficiency.”

Stowe Australia was awarded the contract to install 240 x 200 watt solar panels. By utilising the latest technology, they were able to offer an increase in power capacity to 48 kilowatts at their peak.

“As the electrotechnology industry continues to grow and tackle new technological challenges, it is encouraging to see electrical and communication contractors in Sydney playing such an important role in energy efficiency.”
