Gretchen Scinta, CEO of General Practice SA, today commended SA Health for their continued funding of the vital Health Provider Registry (HPRy) for another three years until June 2013.

“SA Health’s funding of nearly $1 million over the next three years means we can continue to make a positive difference to healthcare in our state,” said Ms. Scinta.

“The Health Provider Registry (HPRy) has been one of the great successes of the Divisions network in South Australia and the Northern Territory over the past eight years. HPRy provides a critical service to health care providers across South Australia by facilitating improved communications about shared patients.

“Having a patient focused, single reference point means patients can be confident about better, safer, faster distribution of clinical healthcare information to GPs, Specialists and Allied Health,” she said.

Gary Holzer, HPRy Program Manager, has seen the registry go from strength to strength since General Practice SA started the system in 2003.

“Today, with the support of over 4,500 GPs, specialists, allied health professionals, and health services, the HPRy is used to send over 650,000 discharge summaries per year from the public hospital system,” said Mr Holzer.

“A recent survey of General Practice has shown that there has been a marked improvement in timeliness and quality of discharge summaries, which is great news for patients who deserve the best continuity of care possible between hospitals and general practice.”

The register, a South Australian innovation, is also extensively used by other healthcare providers including private hospitals, community health organizations, private practice, outpatient departments and the Communicable Diseases Control Cranch to send reports, referrals, health alerts and other patient communications.
