Ball Up, the pinnacle of Streetball, hits Australian shores this weekend for a month long tour, and search for the next Ball Up star. Taking in ten cities nationwide, the Ball Up tour culminates in an ‘all-comers’ Grand Final at Melbourne’s Hisense Arena on the last weekend in June.
‘Tipping-off’ in Hobart on Saturday 4 June, the tour visits Melbourne, Geelong, Adelaide, Perth, Cairns, Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong.
Streetball is basketball in its purest, unadulterated form – a gathering of athletes not for money, but for the love of the game, for the freedom to express themselves and to engage at an almost tribal level.
With a strong underground following in Australia the stars of Ball Up, including The Professor (Grayson Boucher), AO (Aaron Owens), Mr Afrika (Anthony Pimble) and SpecialFX (Ryan Williams) are household names in the United States, extreme athletes with a unique blend of speed, power, finesse and showmanship.
Ball Up Australia CEO, Peter Fiddes, explains that one of the greatest attributes of the Ball Up tour is the opportunity to engage local players in each host city and give them the opportunity to compete against the Ball Up stars, with the best Australian player being invited to the United States in an attempt to win a place on the Ball Up roster worth $US300,000.
“The beauty of the tour is that fans not only have the opportunity to see the best Streetballers in the world up close and personal, but they also have the chance to play against them and chase their own basketball dream.
“The global appeal of Ball Up is enormous,” says Fiddes. “There are so many Australian eyeballs following these guys from half-way around the world that it’s just a huge bonanza to bring them to our shores to play live.”
An open run try out will take place on game day in each city, with up to ten players being selected and coached by the Ball Up crew to take part in a game with the Ball Up stars later that evening in their home town. Ten of these players, drawn from each of the host cities, will then be selected to take part in the Grand Final in Melbourne on 25 June, with one player going on to compete against the best all-comers from the United States for a place on the Ball Up roster.
