One of Australia’s most promising sopranos, Grace Bawden, has just been offered a mentorship program by one of opera’s most rising international tenors, Jesus Leon, who has taken the young soprano to heart and under his wings.

Jesus met Grace whilst she was auditioning in Modena for a scholarship into the Centro Universale del Bel Canto (CUBEC), run by one of Italy’s most beloved and revered sopranos, Ms Mirella Freni. Ms Freni who was often leading lady to Pavarotti and is also on the selection panel for entry into Teatro alla Scala (“La Scala”) which convenes every two years.

As the youngest to audition, having turned 18 only a week earlier, Grace narrowly missed out to dozens of professionally trained and accomplished performers from all over the globe; many graduates from conservatoriums, over 7 years her senior.

However, her talent did not go unnoticed as Grace was assessed by Ms Freni as “fit for entry” into the CUBEC academy, meeting the academic standard required. Nor did her talent go unnoticed by the young tenor who himself came from an impoverished background in Mexico before eventually being discovered by Placido Domingo no less and going on to win countless scholarships.

“Grace is so young and has an amazing talent, but she needs financial backing through investment and sponsorship to get to the next level that will see her succeed in the opera world”, Jesus said. “I am excited about the opportunity of being involved and investing personally in Grace to establish herself as an international artist, just as I have also been fortunate to find the right people to steer my career. These people led me to perform in lead roles of some of the world’s most loved operas, at venues like Royal Albert Hall with the London Philharmonic. I’m living my dream and it doesn’t get much better than that,” he said.

Grace will be performing at the Arts Theatre on 10th December, 2010, with Australian Idol top 4 Finalist, Nathan Brake and Adelaide's own Visnja.
