At the invitation of the Modbury Soccer Club Mayoral candidate Steve Angeli recently took a tour of the Jet Park sporting facilities to meet with the club’s committee and inspect the grounds.

Along with Warwick Holen, an independent Safety Representative, Mr Angeli was able to see first-hand the state of the facilities and discuss support to cater for the club’s growing membership.

“There is an immediate need for repairs and this does needs to be addressed. I will look closely at what support the new council could provide and prioritise,” says Steve Angeli.

Mr. Angeli states that he is also receiving letters from parents and members in the community expressing their concerns about the many problems the Club is tackling.

Mr. Angeli is in favour of supporting the future development of the local sporting community and is keen to assist Modbury Soccer Club to work closely with the local Council, State and Federal government agencies in order to upgrade the Jet Park facilities.

“If the Soccer Club is successful in the next round of grants ending 15th November 2010 I will look at what level of support the council can make to complement it.”

Mr Angeli is proposing to ensure that community sports facilities, like the one at Jet Park allow all young players and members of the community an opportunity to reach their full potential.

“My approach is to seek community consultation, and have further discussions with the club to ensure that council is spending money on programs and development that the community wants and needs,” says Mr. Angeli.

New facilities that receive council funding should benefit the broader community as well as local sporting groups. Council support will ideally have the backing of a business plan to utilise the facilities and a marketing strategy to foster the development of women’s sporting teams.

Balancing the needs of sporting clubs and the community with the available council funds is consistent with Mr. Angeli’s vision for a Sustainable Tea Tree Gully.
