Adelaide, 25 May, 2016: YourDC has today celebrated the official opening of YourDC Edinburgh, South Australia’s first and only Tier 3 Data Centre, with the goal to pump $1 billion worth of cloud data services into the State economy.

Founded by technology entrepreneurs Scott Hicks and Greg Siegele and backed by a consortium of South Australian investors, the $30 million, 6,500 sqm facility, at Edinburgh Parks is designed to provide the highest levels of Defence-grade security, disaster recovery and connectivity available in the State.

With the YourDC facility at Hawthorn 5km south of the CBD, YourDC now provides the State’s first true disaster recovery solution with unique geographic diversity, security and data protection.

Speaking at the launch, the Honourable Jay Weatherill MP, Premier of South Australia, said that YourDC Edinburgh provides an immediate economic boost for Northern Adelaide but has a far-reaching ripple effect.

“YourDC is a high capacity, high security facility that’s providing not just technology but vital infrastructure for the State’s economic future,” Mr Weatherill said.

“If we are to remain competitive and attract and retain world-class companies, we must have world-class data centres located here in South Australia.

“ICT is an important part of our State’s economic transformation, and today’s announcement shows that we can lead the way when it comes to high tech infrastructure.”

YourDC created 100 jobs during construction, and will create another 30 new jobs immediately at launch. Within the next few months, that figure will be boosted by over 40 customer service staff working at the data centre on behalf of managed service providers such as Telstra, Optus, NextGen, Amcom, TPG, iFibre, and SABRENet/AARNET. Indirectly, the facility enables thousands more jobs to be created just because this infrastructure exists.

Managing Director Scott Hicks said that YourDC had already attracted over 20 customers, including an international Defence giant and a city council, both of which require the security and redundancy a Tier 3 Data Centre affords.

“Without private investment like this in ICT infrastructure, these businesses would have to look interstate for true disaster recovery,” Mr Hicks said.

“YourDC offers custom private data rooms that are unique in the State. They are protected by multiple levels of physical and virtual data security and cannot be accessed by other customers whether deliberately or by accident.

“This is critical infrastructure – if an alarm goes off here it’s not the police who turn up, it's the Star Force.”

Cloud Data Centres

Data centres help organisations manage the risk associated with storing data on their own in-house servers. Cloud data centres have grown in popularity with the rise of cloud computing, which depends on the rapid, secure transfer of data across IP networks.

One of the most energy efficient data centres in Australia, designed with a unique approach to optimising temperature control for humans and machines, YourDC satisfies the demanding criteria of organisations such as the Department of Defence for the highest levels of security and redundancy.

The site delivers massive amounts of power guaranteed by multiple redundant backup systems, and uninterrupted internet connectivity from multiple carriers.

Board and Management

Scott Hicks, Co-founder & CEO

Scott Hicks is the former Managing Director of Adam Internet and has spent his entire working life in internet-related businesses. He is highly respected across the industry and was the first in the State, and often in Australia, to introduce new technologies such as ADSL2+ high-speed broadband, Voice over IP for ISP customers, streaming movies, and cloud data storage.

After leaving Adam Internet in 2013, he invested and took a management role in telecommunications engineering contractor Astelec, which employs over 40 staff working on projects such as the Royal Adelaide Hospital and NBN.

Recognising the growing need for failsafe data management infrastructure, Scott raised the capital for his ‘dream’ project from a consortium of private South Australian investors.  Based on the depth and breadth of his industry knowledge, Scott personally designed the YourDC Data Centre with a unique, energy-efficient approach to the construction of private data rooms, which provide additional physical security and energy management beyond anything else available in SA.

Greg Siegele, Co-founder and Executive Director

Before joining YourDC, Greg was the Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of Ratbag Games where he sold over 2 million video games worldwide. Ratbag won multiple international awards and was celebrated for its best-in-industry development processes and tools before its sale to international games company Midway Games in 2005.
