PLAYLOVERS is staging the WA premiere of Monty Python’s Spamalot this November, the Tony Award-winning musical.

Directed by Kimberley Shaw, it’s described as being “lovingly ripped off” from the 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Similar to the film, Spamalot is a highly-irreverent parody of the King Arthur story written by Monty Python’s Eric Idle who has added various send-ups of Broadway theatre to the script.

The musical’s title comes from a line in the original movie: “We eat ham and jam and spam a lot.”

Shaw confesses she has a love for musicals that are slightly tongue-in-cheek and non-traditional.

“I enjoy doing musicals that are both fun to perform and fun for the audience,” she said.

Spamalot will appeal to Monty Python fans, musical theatre buffs, Anglophiles and lovers of comedy.

“It’s sheer escapism and has something for everyone, from that wonderful familiar Python-esque humour through to leggy Las Vegas-style show girls.”

Shaw has been involved in theatre for the past 20 years with Playlovers, Blak Yak (note: no C in Blak), KADS, Roleystone and Kwinana Theatres, scoring numerous best director, best production and best musical awards, along with being the current president of the Independent Theatre Association.

“There are so many die-hard Monty Python fans out there who would be so disappointed if we 'got it wrong', so it’s a huge responsibility to get the feel of Spamalot right,” she said.

“The scale of the show is also huge with more than 200 costumes.

“But my husband Martin is the designer and a huge Python fan, so I knew he would create great props and sets.”

Spamalot plays at 8pm, November 5, 6, 11, 12, 13, 18, 19, 20, 25 and 26, 7pm on November 14 and 21 with a 2pm matinee on November 7. Tickets are $25, $20 concession – book on 0415 777 173, [email protected] or through BOCS on (08) 9484 1133.
