Why do the artist's raw materials so often include fear, pain and loss? Add love in abundance to the mix and you have the latest collection from New Zealand artist Kere Maree Baker, of Sydney's Red Olive Studios.

On show at the Red Door Gallery, Summer Hill, November 13-23, Baker's collection reflects a life lived with integrity in the face of many of the major challenges fate can throw at us human beings.

Baker, an interior designer who now lives in Manly, has a lifelong love of art, colour and all things aesthetic, but what makes this collection compelling is its reflection of pain and passion that seep through into each canvas.

A graduate of Sydney's Enmore Design Centre, Baker studied Maori tribal art in her earlier years and the culture's impact is evident in her contemporary tribal works, which incorporate traditional motifs with an urban, grungy modern edge.

Inspired by UK stencil artist Banksy’s belief that art should "say something", Baker's nude ‘Not Perfect’ series "was a kneejerk reaction to today’s increasing body image issues, particularly prevalent in (but not limited to) females," she says. "The female form, in all its unique beauty, should be celebrated more."

Baker is co-presenting with artist Olga Kol at the Red Door Gallery.

Red Olive Studios

Red Olive Studios offers the combined talents and experience of artist and designer Kere M Baker. This restless designer's eye is always seeking a new and creative approach consistent with the needs, tastes and budget of the client. Colour solutions are a specialty of Red Olive Studios. A colour consultation can range from a one-off consultation on site, with colours selected on the spot and recommended to you. An extensive consultation can include viewing the space at various times and light levels, larger samples ordered and can even include light boxes and colour boards created with proportional colour bars and colour renderings if required. Property styling is another skill, and a rapidly growing service in a volatile real estate market.
