Rural Solutions SA is a finalist in the Building Communities category of the 2008 Premier's Awards.

The Community and Indigenous Services team of the multi-faceted consultancy business has been nominated for its Management in the Adelaide and Mt Lofty Ranges NRM Region program.

The project highlights a unique relationship between four Aboriginal nations of the region, Rural Solutions SA and the Adelaide and Mt Lofty Ranges Natural Resources Management Board.

From the beginning in 2002 the project has supported capacity building of Aboriginal people and NRM personnel, enabling a well informed decision making process.

Strengthening this was a specific governance training course for the nations' representatives to understand the NRM Act and their responsibilities.

Rural Solutions SA team leader Jason Downs said the development and production of an Engagement and Protocols Manual was a first in South Australia, and useable for anyone wishing to respectfully engage Aboriginal people in the region on any matter of interaction.

"The project demonstrates best practice in supporting Aboriginal people and Nations to support and work together with each other and government," said Mr Downs.

Finalists in the Building Communities category are:

  • Outback Connect Program (Department of Further Education, Employment Science and Technology)
  • Management in the Adelaide and Mt Lofty Ranges NRM Region (Rural Solutions SA)
  • Playford North Urban Renewal Master Plan Process - Playford Alive

Rural Solutions SA on behalf of the Department of Further Education, Employment Science and Technology also coordinated the innovative Outback Connect Program which provided basic Information Technology (IT) training and IT technical support for people living in very remote areas.

Outback Connect was a collaborative project with several State, Federal and community partners, further aiming to generate a demand for on-line service provision, create a network of young people skilled in IT support, and demonstrate an income-producing model of IT support.

With access to past existing networks of individuals, community and industry groups Rural Solutions SA was able to implement the project quickly, with immediate benefits to customers and program participants.

The Premier's Awards showcase excellence in the Public Sector.

They are closely aligned to the six objectives of the South Australian Strategic Plan and recognise those who have provided innovation, improved the quality of services to customers, brought about lasting improvements, and built partnerships with people and groups in the wider community.

The Award winners will be announced on 21 November 2008.
