Digital agency Via Media Communications has followed up its recent release of the Hardy’s Wines website with the launch of a site for another global company, Great Southern Rail – operators of Australia’s world-renowned trains, The Ghan, and the Indian Pacific.

“We’ve got two of the world’s top 10 rail journeys”, said Marketing Manager David Smith, “and as a travel company we needed to take greater advantage of the online opportunities available to us. The new website is part of our strategy to do that”.

Designed and developed by Via Media after winning the business in a national pitch, the site uses dramatic imagery from the landscapes traversed by the trains to communicate the travel experience. “We were lucky, really” said Via Media Managing Director Jason Neave, “the trains cross some of our most rugged and beautiful country, so there was no shortage of amazing photography. We just had to try and do the scenery some justice online – and I think we’ve achieved that.”

Great Southern Rail intends to use a mix of online and offline media to help let their customers know they can now book the full suite of rail, holiday packages, accommodation and tours online. “We’re currently working with Via on a communications strategy that is a departure from what we’ve done in the past, we are excited about the opportunities we now have to communicate our message on the world stage” says Smith. “You certainly can’t experience the full beauty of Australia from 30,000 feet in the air – our website and the campaign that follows will help show our guests that their holiday begins the moment they step aboard, and the journey should be as much a part of the holiday as the destination.”

Great Southern Rail is currently running specials on it’s Indian Pacific service during wildflower season. Visit for details.
