Rapid advances in road and transport knowledge and technology place a high priority on staying abreast of latest developments.
The Sprayed Sealing Conference (10-12 October) will focus on ‘Sustaining sprayed sealing practice’. It will examine the practical issues faced in maintaining sprayed seal performance in a climate of increasing expectations and demands, depletion of quality materials and a push for larger and heavier freight vehicles.
The key invited speaker will be Mr Dennis Rossmann, a materials and pavement engineering specialist of the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) South Africa has a world class reputation for its sprayed seal program.
The ARRB Conference will be held on 13-15 October immediately after the Sprayed Sealing Conference. The theme is ‘Building on 50 years of road and transport research’. The Conference will discuss the key emerging infrastructure, capacity, freight and environmental issues affecting the road and transport industry and review current and future options.
His Excellency Dr Kenneth Comninos Michael, AC Governor of Western Australia, will be the keynote speaker. Dr Michael was previously the Commissioner of Main Roads WA and is well placed to review the major challenges facing the industry.
Mr Gerard Waldron, ARRB’s Managing Director, said, ‘We are proud to host these conferences which will provide opportunities to enhance knowledge, share information and to develop and renew contacts.’
VicRoads Chief Executive Gary Liddle said that VicRoads is committed to finding new and sustainable means of developing Victoria’s roads.
‘We are focused on finding ways to improve the safety and operation of our roads, which is why we are the platinum sponsor for these important and innovative conferences,’ said Mr Liddle.

ARRB Group’s history
In 2010 ARRB is celebrating its 50th anniversary as Australia's national road research body.
A recommendation for a national road research organisation was made as early as 1924, and this eventuated in the Australian Road Research Board holding its first meeting in 1960. The first national conference was held in Canberra in 1962, and the first research journal was published in the same year. By 1972 purpose built premises were constructed in Vermont South, in Melbourne's (then) outer eastern suburbs, where ARRB remains headquartered to this day.
ARRB has come a long way in 50 years. ARRB's funding arrangements have changed substantially, and the organisation has grown. Regional offices and representatives in Perth, Brisbane, Sydney, Adelaide, Hobart and Darwin provide our services much closer to our Members and many of our research partners and clients. Ten years ago saw the establishment of ARRB in Jakarta, Indonesia and in 2007/08 our office in Dubai, UAE.
As part of ARRB's 50th anniversary celebrations, a range of activities will be held across our offices, with the main two conferences to be held in October in Melbourne: the 2nd International Sprayed Sealing Conference and the 24th ARRB Conference.
