Set your taste buds free this Spring and head to Ballarat to enjoy fine food, wine and tremendous hospitality.

This burgeoning food and wine region is hosting a range of different events from September through to the end of November, all designed to show off local produce and entice the visitor to indulge and buy gourmet sauces, sweet treats and olive oils that cannot be found in supermarkets.

Taste on Sunday 12 September is a day of indulgence and a chance to sample the region’s award winning red and white wines, quality meats, sweet treats and baked goods. Around 60 exhibitors will be showcasing their wares including Goldfields Farmhouse Cheese, John Harbour Quality Meats, Café 321, Kinclaven Grove, Michael Unwin Wines and Ballarat District Vignerons. Dallas Cuddy from Verge Restaurant in Melbourne is guest chef at Taste while local chefs will cook their favourite recipes as well as share tips. Taste is on from 10am to 4pm at the Wendouree Netball Centre, Norman Street, Wendouree.

Springfest on Sunday 31 October is a firm family favourite attracting over 15,000 people from across Victoria each year. This Rotary Club of Ballarat initiative is based at Lake Wendouree and this year will have 300 stallholders selling everything from food and wine, art and craft, jewellery and clothes. Take advantage of the free bus to get around the lake or, better still, enjoy a leisurely stroll. Springfest is at Lake Wendouree foreshore from 10am to 4pm.

Also on Sunday 31 October is Open Cellars and the chance to enjoy outstanding wines, , gourmet food and exciting live music in four different places. The participating wineries are Captains Creek Organic Wines at Blampied, Mt Beckworth Wines at Enoteca Clunes, Mt Coghill Wines at Coghill’s Creek and Wightwick & Tomboy Hill will combine at Wightwick Wines, Invermay.

Open Cellars is the first of many events making up Ballarat by the Glass which is running throughout November – when many restaurants will feature Ballarat wines by the glass and some will be running special menus, lunches or dinners – as well as a wine appreciation program running each Wednesday.

A very special feature of the month is the Duck and Pinot Experience on Saturday, 13 November at Craigs Royal Hotel, Lydiard Wine Bar & Phoenix Brewery. Each restaurant will offer a special duck dish accompanied by two different Pinot Noir wines supplied by Ballarat wineries.. A third of the guests will start at each restaurant and then rotate each hour to sample the dish at the next Restaurant so book in with a group of friends so that you rotate together. Settle in for the evening at your last venue. Bookings open 1 October 2010.

Another event to put in the diary now is Sinclair of Scotsburn on Sunday 21 November. The vinyard will come alive with music, great food from Peter Ford and outstanding wines from the region. Tickets are on sale from 1 October 2010.

New Release Tasting is being held on Thursday 11 November at Wightwick Wines Cellardoor at Invermay but the location may change.
