Melbourne online start up, Cardlimbo, has just been revealed (August 2010) as the Winner of Anthill’s SMART 100 - People’s Choice Award for 2010. Anthill’s ‘SMART 100 Index was developed in 2008 to identify and rank Australia’s 100 most innovative products, proving to be one of the largest surveys of its kind in Australia. Anthill is one of Australia’s top business and finance websites and a leading online community for business owners. This year, the People’s Choice survey generated over 3000 reader reactions.

On revealing this years People’s Choice Winner, Anthill wrote, “Often the best ideas are the simplest. And what could be more simple than an online marketplace for gift cards, the premise behind Anthill’s SMART 100 Readers’ Choice winner for 2010.” Source:

Cardlimbo came to life when Cardlimbo CEO and Co-Founder, Fergus Koochew, recognized Australian’s had almost no flexibility when it came to gift card vouchers. In an Australian first, Cardlimbo created the option for consumers to sell unwanted gift card vouchers for cash, buy them at a discount or donate them to charity in a secure and user friendly online environment.

On winning the award, Mr Koochew was grateful and humbled by the level of support Cardlimbo received from the public. “The Cardlimbo team is delighted to be recognized by readers of one of Australia’s leading online business publications and the broader public. We would love to thank our customers and fans for voting and the tremendous support they have provided Cardlimbo since launching. And we look forward to continuing to provide our customers with Australia's broadest selection and lowest prices for their gift card voucher needs."

“For Australian consumers this award generates awareness that unwanted gift card vouchers no longer need to be wasted and, in fact, can be a valuable source of cash. This means more Australian consumers will now have the power to choose exactly how they want to use their gift card vouchers.”

This award also places pressure on Australian retailers to offer more flexibility when it comes to gift card vouchers. It means the days of some retailers relying on breakage to drive profit margins are numbered. Australian Consumers’ Association, Choice, for example, estimates up to 1 in 3 gift card vouchers in Australia are now believed to expire without being used**.
