Independent candidate for Mayo Bill Spragg has accused the political parties of taking South Australia for granted; following is Mr Spragg's viewpoint:

"It would seem that the major parties are focussed on projects that serve the needs of people in marginal Queensland and NSW seats neglecting the very real challenges that Australia faces.

"Electors in Mayo are seeing at first hand what happens when politicians focus on short term political opportunism in preference to taking leadership on the challenges facing all Australians.

"In voting for me the voters in Mayo have the opportunity to send a strong message to both parties that regardless of the outcome any Federal government will be judged on the leadership it shows on the issue on the diverse aspects of food security.

"In particular control of the Murray Darling Basin needs to be taken away from parochial state politics. Only a Federal take over can ensure the health of the river system and ensure that primary producers have predictable access to the water they need.

"There should be an immediate moratorium on the rezoning of all agricultural land for housing or industry - we simply cannot afford to lose anymore agricultural land.

"Finally we need to protect our primary industry against foreign imports. We need to acknowledge that without a vibrant and viable primary industry we will not be able to produce the food we need to feed our growing population.

"The issues of population growth and food security face all Australians by voting for me Mayo voters can register that concern."
