The University of New England in Armidale, NSW, has signed a contract with NetSpot Pty Ltd for supply of their online learning systems, Moodle and Mahara. These systems will start to be implemented within the University immediately and the full conversion to Moodle and Mahara will be completed by mid 2011.

UNE will be one of the first universities in Australia to implement the new version of Moodle (Moodle 2.0) as part of its programme to develop the learning experiences it can offer through its learning management system.

“The partnership with NetSpot and the move to Moodle and Mahara are important aspects of the large renewal programme we are undertaking to reinvigorate our extensive online course offerings together with the technologies and support systems that contribute so much to the student experience,” said Professor Graham Webb, Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) at UNE.

Ten Australian Universities have now adopted Moodle. Allan Christie, Founder and Managing Director of NetSpot, believes that the growing popularity of open source software is putting power back into the hands of universities such as UNE.

“Moodle has proven to be robust, reliable and enterprise-ready for broad adoption across the higher education sector in Australia. This management of risk combined with the flexibility of open source allows universities to confidently take control of their eLearning strategies, which are increasingly becoming mission-critical.”

The ability to draw upon the expertise and ongoing experience of a company that offers a fully managed service to many other institutions greatly mitigates the risk involved in the rollout of a new software system. This proved to be a key driver for the partnership between UNE and NetSpot (who will both implement and host the Moodle 2.0 and Mahara based solution).
