Appleby came out firing on the final day in West Virginia shooting 11-under to jump seven spots up the leaderboard to take the win from third round leader American Jeff Overton, who finished a shot behind Appleby in outright second.

On his way to claiming the title Appleby shot nine birdies and one eagle to take the top spot, today’s round his second consecutive bogey-free round of the tournament.

Throughout the four days Appleby’s scorecard showed only one blemish – his sole bogey of the tournament coming on the par three 15th during the second round.

Quite amazingly Appleby’s is the second 59 in 25 days on the US PGA Tour. No player has ever shot a lower score in Tour history.

American Paul Goydos shot the fourth 59 in US PGA Tour history on July 8, 2010, during the first round of the John Deere Classic.

Appleby’s previous career low round was 62, which he shot at the 2003 Las Vegas Invitational.

With today’s win Appleby claimed the first prize cheque of US$1,080,000 (AUD$1,192,987.90.)

The win is Appleby’s first on the US PGA Tour in four years, his last victory coming in 2006 when claimed both the Mercedes Championship and the Shell Houston Open in the same year.

A regular on the US PGA Tour since 1996, the man from Cohuna in Victoria has now claimed a total of nine US PGA Tour wins, the latest coming an incredible 13 years after his maiden victory back in 1997.

Of the other Australasians in the field, Aron Price finished T9 at 14-under, Marc Leishman finished T16 at 13-under, John Senden finished T21 at 12-under and Aaron Baddeley finished T36 at11-under.

Cameron Percy and Mathew Goggin both finished in T45 at 10-under, while Greg Chalmers was the only other Aussie to make the cut finishing at T51 and nine-under for the tournament.

The 2010 Greenbrier Classic was played on The Old White Course, White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia (Par 70.)
