Update from event organiser Graham Harris:

"We had a major set back this week. The venue Empyrean Function Centre was seriously vandalised and is out of commission for two months, leaving us homeless," he said.

"After much searching and help from my daughter Jacqui we are happy to announce that the Perth Soccer Club has come to the rescue and allowed us the use of their function centre.

"The address is 3 Lawley, Street West Perth. It is directly behind the Italian club (Fitzgerald St)."

IN THE 1970s, Perth people used to wake up with football legend John K. Watts and DJ Bazza Martin regularly.

It was all part of their popular breakfast radio show which, at various times, was on 6PR, 6IX and 6PM (later becoming 92.9), and holds a record as the only Australian breakfast program to more than 50 per cent of the population in its ratings.

The former breakfast buddies are holding a 20-year reunion show at the Perth Soccer Club on July 23, full of skits and jokes to raise money for the Variety Club of WA.

Event organiser Graham Harris said Martin was flying in from Adelaide especially to be part of the event, hosted by popular compere Allan Symons.

“It’s a chance to re-live some great times, catch up with terrific people and support a wonderful cause,” he said.

“Our aim is to raise as much money for Variety as possible to help the kids out there.”

Playing football for East Perth and Geelong in the 1950s and 60s, Watts went on to have a successful radio and television career for more than 30 years, working for several WA stations, and even wrote jokes for Bob Hope.

He teamed up with Martin in the mid-70s to create their unique breakfast radio partnership, which led to them being employed by Kerry Packer at one stage.

“Their material was often controversial for its time but it was all in good fun,” Harris said.

“The jokes often pointed fun at other sports, politicians, other footballers and even themselves.

“Wattsie and Bazza really want to help Variety WA in its efforts to provide for sick, disadvantaged and special needs children.

“The impact of Variety’s help can never be underestimated and, by coming along to the reunion show, people will be supporting ongoing efforts to make the world a better place for thousands of needy kids.”

The Wattsie & Martin 20-Year Reunion Show starts at 6pm, July 23, at the Perth Soccer Club, 3 Lawley, Street, West Perth (behind the Italian Club on Fitzgerald Street), Western Australia.

Tickets are $95 and include quality cocktail food and two drinks on arrival. For bookings, call Robyn at RCI Building Consultants on (08) 9227 5511 for ticket sales during business hours or (08) 9274 2889 after hours.

Variety Club of WA

It all started in Pittsburgh, USA, in 1927 when a group of 11 young men working in a theatre, formed a social club called Variety. On Christmas Eve 1928 at a party in the Sheridan Theatre, Pittsburgh, an infant girl was found. Attached to the blanket in which the little girl was wrapped was a note… “Please take care of my baby. Her name is Catherine. I can no longer take care of her”… signed ‘a broken hearted mother.’
Proving the heart of show business was a big one, the members decided to foster the baby. She was officially named Catherine Variety Sheridan, and soon bags of clothing and toys from across the country were being donated - far more than one child could ever use. And so, Variety ‘Tents’ were set up - now spread throughout some 14 different countries - to assist even more children in need.

Variety Australia, Tent 56, began in 1974 with Paul Hogan as Chief Barker (Chairman).

Variety WA began in 1980 and since then, has consistently been recognised as a leader in innovative fundraising events and programs, as one of the top ten Variety Tents in the world.
