The Australian Government invites all current practising and trainee (pre-service) language teachers to apply for a fantastic opportunity to spend three weeks experiencing the culture of the language they love and teach. This opportunity is available through the Endeavour Language Teachers Fellowships (ELTF) program.

The program is funded by the Australian Government and aims to provide practising and trainee language teachers with an intensive professional learning experience to increase their language proficiency and to strengthen language teachers’ networks nationally and within each state and territory.

Through experiencing the language and culture first hand, ELTF participants gain greater insight into the language they teach and are better placed to share this knowledge and skill with their students.

Since 2004, the program has accommodated 1129 practising and trainee language teachers from across Australia to 10 different international destinations.
In January 2010, Shannon White joined 22 other Australians, all French language teachers, and ventured to France for the first time.

“My experience in France with the ELTF was absolutely incredible and it has made me love the language and culture even more. The highlight of my trip was the authentic language experiences I had with the French people. I felt empowered by speaking French to them in an authentic situation, rather than the classroom scenarios I had experienced previously.

“I met so many talented French teachers from all over Australia and we still email each other – not only to keep in touch and reminisce, but to share teaching ideas and resources across the states.

“The ELTF program opened my eyes to the culture and traditions of France and I now feel better equipped to teach this to my students more accurately and authentically.”
2011 placements are now open for practising teachers of Arabic, Mandarin, French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean or Spanish, and for trainee teachers of Arabic, Indonesian, Mandarin, Japanese or Korean.

The program provides return airfares, accommodation, tuition, some meals and cultural activities.

Applications close on 3 August 2010 for practising teachers and 13 September 2010 for trainee teachers.
