Social media is media designed to be disseminated through social interaction, created using highly accessible and scalable publishing techniques. Social media can take many different forms, including Internet forums, weblogs, social blogs, wikis, podcasts, pictures, video, rating and social bookmarking. Technologies include: blogs, picture-sharing, vlogs, wall-postings, email, instant messaging, music-sharing, crowdsourcing, and voice over IP, to name a few.

The Social[Media]Butterflies (S[M]B) collective has emerged to provide inspirations to help people, experiment, have fun, demonstrate and also raise awareness about Social Media in South Australia.

It is an initiative of CharlieDesign.

The S[M]B members are a collective of expertise from areas such as corporate, business, government, recruitment/employment, youth, home, sales, legal, technology, marketing and public relations. Each are unique, individual, talented and socially networked.

Aside from general commentary in topical areas, the group can also provide:

* Advice & Research
* Legal Advice
* Recruitment Advice
* Strategic & Tactical Plans
* Tools & Resources
* Training & Seminars

In recent discussion over what social media means to the collective, varying answers came back with a similar theme of community and sharing however Amber Lawson's youth voice was what we need to listen to.

Amber said "I don’t think anyone notices the impact that social media is having on our world". Whilst many may disagree or profess that we do understand the impact, she went on to point out that,

"With the changing scope of our world, we’re playing video games against Americans, swapping diet tips with our neighbours in Europe and ordering scarves, DVDs and iPhones from the guys up in Asia".

So, why the impact and what does social media mean to Amber?

She said, "it depends on the day. Or my mood. Or whether I’m having to comfort my best friend from an anonymous (online) offender, or whether I’m talking to my best friends from back in the good old days (in England). Social media may seem like a blessing to some….but I’m still deciding."

In summary, social media can mean a lot to one person and absolutely nothing to another but it is here to stay and the impact and way we use it effectively or not use it at all is something real that we need to be cognisant of.

S[M]B isnt interested in just the fun aspects of social media. We want others to be aware of the risks, issues and real elements of what is involved.

Founding collective member, Charlie Robinson from CharlieDesign said "Social media and networking is still relatively new for business however it is a collective term where like-minded people share, care, learn, interact and engage for personal or business benefit. The impact, risks and benefits for business are only now emerging."
