The economic downturn has forced higher crime rates but has also seen a disturbing rise in the number of dodgy security consultants and products in WA, warns Security Expert Andrew Herrmann, founder and Managing Director of Access 1 Security Systems in Malaga.

“The downturn in the global economy is driving more crime, so the security industry is booming and there’s been a marked increase in the number of individuals entering the industry and security firms opening up,” Mr Herrmann said.

Between 2009 and 2014, national security industry employment grew by 29 per cent, or 14,000 jobs.

“Security is on the minds of most people, whether it is commercial or residential, because unfortunately the potential risk of being attacked is a common reality these days. However people need to be warned against using unregistered and unlicensed security companies or their products.

“One of the worst situations I have seen was at a women’s refuge which needed an early warning alarm to notify police and security patrols of problems instantly so that women and staff were protected in their times of need.

“External detectors and panic alarms were not working, leaving the refuge open to attack and without protection. In addition, the centre had been paying for monitoring for over 3 years and the system wasn’t even connected to a control room. It was a disaster waiting to happen!

“Luckily the refuge contacted us to do some checks, we had it all working in a week, and now they have the protection they needed.”

Mr Herrmann said consumers should check that any security company is fully licensed through the Police Licensing Department, and approved by the Australian Security Industry Association and the Security Agents Institute, the peak bodies for security professionals in WA.

“The community needs to be very vigilant and check that any security industry supplier is who they claim to be.” Mr Herrmann said.
