The biggest solo show to date by New Zealand artist Kere M. Baker has its official opening at the the Arthouse Hotel in Sydney today (Monday, June 7, running to June 28).

“The Layers of Her” is a collection of 25 nudes that draws on the artist’s experiences in her battle against illness, in particular her relationships with friends and family.

“Losing control of aspects of my own body and appearance, and the esteem issues that go with that, are reflected in this latest collection,” says Baker, who now lives in Sydney's Northern Beaches where she runs interior design firm Red Olive Studios.

All the pieces in the collection have been inspired by women in her life and their sometimes paradoxical reactions to the artist’s changing fortunes.

“The experiences were not always positive but there is always a lesson and a few surprising silver linings,” Baker adds.

Featured pieces from the at exhibition, which runs through to 28 June, have already received a lot of attention on social media networks such as Facebook and Twitter.

The Arthouse is synonymous with support of up-and-coming artists, and often lends itself to pieces that push the boundaries.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for me to be received in such a positive light by the Arthouse, which as a matter of course doesn’t take commission from any of its art sales,” says Baker.
