Congratulations to Melissa Aguasa, Melissa Filipino Shop – Winner of BUSINESS PERSON OF THE YEAR AWARD at the 30th Belmont & Western Australian Small Business Awards
In front of an audience of over 400 attendees, Melissa Aguasa from Melissa Filipino Shop was one of the many Western Australian small business winners in the 30th Belmont & Western Australian Small Business Awards 2023 on Wednesday, November 1, 2023. Held in the grand ballroom of the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre, the ‘Night of Stars Event’ celebrated excellence in business and community achievement.
The welcome address was delivered by City of Belmont Deputy Mayor Cr Deborah Sessions, together with our MC’s for the evening, Member for Belmont, Cassie Rowe MLA, and Belmont BEC Inc. Patron Louise Percy. The night’s entertainment was provided by Kaylene Taylor, with welcome to country performed by Dadajaal Daniel and Johnny Garlett.

The Designer Showcase Fashion Parade for 2023 featured stunning designs from visiting Filipino designer Eleven S and WA designers Silver Star Designs, Jilaga Designs, Kirrikin and Miss Scarlett with models from Metro Agency.
When winner Melissa Aguasa, the owner, and Manager of Melissa's Filipino Shop, first arrived in Perth she worked odd jobs and put her savings towards helping her husband pay the bills and save for her business idea. After putting in many hard years, the opportunity came up for her to own her own supermarket, bakery, and restaurant. Today, Melissa's Filipino Shop is a community friendly hub for Filipinos in WA, stocking a wide range of affordable products.
Melissa says, “I believe that an integral part of the business is social responsibility and proudly give back to my community where I can.”
Melissa Aguasa from Melissa’s Filipino Shop was also inducted into Belmont & Western Australian Small Business Awards 2023 ‘Hall of Fame’. Her past awards included the 2021 Business Migrant of the Year Award and 2022 Innovation & Creativity Award.
