A growing concern about the global increase in violence against women prompted the International Women’s Group of the International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF TKD) to develop a special self-defense program for women and girls.
In July last year, delegates from national ITF Taekwon Do associations from different countries gathered in New Delhi, India to develop a curriculum that could be used by instructors around the world.
Cathy Cocks from Inglewood in Western Australia was fortunate to be one of the Australian delegates to attend the international conference and to be involved in the development of the self-defense program designed for women and girls.
Together with her daughter Louise, they have now launched the new program in Perth and classes start in February.
“Kan-do Self Defense for Women and Girls grew out of our desire to share skills and knowledge to help females of all ages protect themselves in threatening situations,” Cathy said.
“This is a unique program based on the principles of ITF Taekwon-Do that has been specially developed by women for women. It is purely about self defense, does not require any previous knowledge of martial arts and is suitable for all ages.”
Cathy is a 4th Degree Black Belt and qualified International Instructor. Louise is a 1st Degree Black Belt and Assistant Instructor. They would now like to pass on the skills learnt over the past 20 years at the Low Tae Kwon Do Academy run by Grand Master Low Ming Tuck.
All the classes are small groups of 10-12 students so that everyone gets individual attention, the chance to learn and then practice all the techniques.
The classes are at venues across Perth such as schools, halls, gymnasiums and fitness centres. No previous experience is necessary and women of all ages and fitness levels are catered for in the 8 week program.
“We would like to help women learn how to defend themselves and feel more confident through using effective techniques aimed at the most vulnerable targets.”
