What a Classic
Trevor Stilling won the Classic cup in the first round of the Australian Rally Championship series in Canberra over the weekend, despite limping home in the final stages with mechanical damage to his Datsun Stanza.
Trevor Stilling has an impressive list of wins and placings in 2WD and classic competitions in a racing career spanning over 30 years. Last year Trevor took out the 2020 2WD Australian Rally championship cup in a Nissan Silvia but will be contesting the new classic cup category in the Australian Rally Championship Series during 2021.
Having won many classic awards over the years including, the 2017 Australian Classic rally championship, Trevor Stilling is well placed to take out the classic series win in 2021. Stilling acknowledged the support from his experienced codriver Western Australia’s Murray Hynes and his service team from High Country Automotive in Cooma for their excellent servicing of the Stanza.
Close behind Trevor Stilling contesting the Junior Cup series was his son Chris Stilling who came third in the Junior cup and the 2WD series but would have placed higher in the junior cup standings had his car not damaged a drive train in the final stages of the event forcing the team to back off the pace with a goal to finish for first round points. Chris Stilling and co-driver Larisa Biggar were aboard the Simply Music Management Toyota Corolla.
Many cars failed to finish the Netier National Capital rally with drivers commenting on how tough the roads were on the cars and the technical nature of the event. There were no surprises though for the winner with reigning Australian Rally Champion Harry Bates winning the event outright with his brother Lewis Bates in second place aboard their Toyota Yaris AP4s. Nathan Quinn rounded the podium in third outright aboard a Mitsubishi Evo10.
Another notable finish was Kosciuszko Automotive team of Andrew Penny and Rhys Llewellyn taking out third in their class in the Production Cup category of the championship and first ACT regional rally series round one.
