Country Music – Island Style!

Perhaps snorkelling in turquoise waters over coral reef, soaking up history in a World Heritage listed area or exploring a unique local culture are not quite what you’d expect from a Country Music Festival?  Yet travelling to the annual Norfolk Island Country Music Festival delivers so much more than usual as excellent music and a great ‘festival feel’ get combined with a brilliant holiday destination.

Yet another unique dimension to its Country Music Festival is that fans actually get to rub shoulders with the headlining acts. Such is the nature of small and easy Norfolk Island that you could expect to bump into performers at a café or in the local supermarket. In May 2016 the island presents its 23rd Festival so you know that you’ll be coming to a place that has a long-standing love of country music and knows how to organise its event.

The headliners for 2016 are an impressive line-up.  Country, Heart & Soul (Felicity Urquhart, Lyn Bowtell and Kevin Bennett) are three of Australian Country's finest singer/songwriters drawn together by their mutual love for earthy, authentic contemporary Country Music, a passion for singing and the craft of songwriting. Team them with guest artist Luke O’Shea whose pedigree includes 6 times Golden Guitar Winer, 2015 Male Artist of the Year and 2012 & 2014 Independent Country Music Artist of the Year – and it’s clear the stage will be jumping. Tanya Cornish returns to the Island after winning last year’s coveted Norfolk Island Country Music Festival Trans-Tasman Entertainer of the Year Award and also the 2015 National Talent Quest.

The Trans-Tasman award reflects the island’s location mid-way between Australia and New Zealand and also that top line New Zealand country music performers are included in the headlining and guest artist acts. Gaining access to highly successful Kiwi singer-songwriter Jackie Bristow – without the crowds – will be amazing. Now living in the USA, Jackie has a huge following performing and touring all over the USA, including later this year opening with Tommy Emmanuel. NeillyRich are Matthew McNeilly and Amelia Richards and they have a youthful and energetic style paying homage to the greats, but best channelling the spirit of Johnny Cash and Loretta Lynn. Dynamic duo Chet and Melissa combine Chet’s superb guitar skills with Melissa’s remarkable voice. If you haven’t heard them before, you really will sit up and notice their performance.

The beauty of Norfolk Island is infamous with tall majestic pines, high rising cliffs, green undulating valleys, lush rainforest and beautiful surrounding waters. Many departing visitors report feeling a sense of ‘coming home’ perhaps to a way of life they knew from years ago where a friendly, relaxed pace and sense of attention to life customs and community is the norm. For country music fans the Norfolk Island Country Music Festival has so much to offer on top of a usual Festival experience. Country music ‘Island style’ really is worth checking out.
