Calling all swimmers, their friends, loved ones and supporters… Are you ready for one of the most iconic ocean events of the year? Are you ready for the Busselton Jetty Swim?
From its humble beginnings in 1996, the event has matured into an international swimming tournament, with associated entertainment, taking place over two consecutive days. And this, its 25th year, promises to be a true spectacular.
So… Let’s take a look at the important features:
- The swim takes place in the gorgeous location of Busselton, a vibrant town in the wonderful South West of Western Australia.
- The main swim comprises a 3.6km ocean marathon around the Busselton Jetty. It’s open to solo swimmers, as well as relay teams of two or four people.
- There’s also a 1 mile (1.6km) option, whereby you jump in at the deep end – leaping (or climbing) from the jetty to swim back to shore.
- Kids can join in too, with the junior event taking place over a distance of 222 metres around the outside of the jetty.
This year’s event brings 3,300 swimmers together, not to mention their supporters, setting the scene for a wonderful weekend of sport and entertainment. To find out more and enter (or be added to the waitlist), visit the official website of the Busselton Jetty Swim.
You can’t have a spectacular of this magnitude without some great entertainment and activities. And the organisers have certainly got it right, with a well thought out program and pretty much all it being free to join in! From skate demonstrations to live music, giant games, beach games, sandcastle competitions, battle of the bands, fireworks and more, there really is something for everyone.
Two exciting musical acts who’re primed and ready to grace the centre stage are alternative music sensation, Eskimo Joe, and awesome sea shanty group, The Anchormen. If you love traditional folk music, then these guys will be right up your street.
Busselton Jetty itself, at 1.6km long, is the longest wooden structure in the Southern Hemisphere. Heritage listed, it was built over 140 years ago, and is an absolute must-see for anyone who visits the area.
