Wednesday, January 8th, 2020 - Brewery Training Australia

In the last financial year, independent craft breweries generated $223 million in revenue representing the fastest growing part of the brewery sector. With more than 600 craft brewers now operating across Australia, 90 in Queensland alone, it's high time the industry had access to professionally trained staff.

“Brewery Training Australia was created by industry for industry and fills the training and consulting void that is ever present in the craft brewery industry,” said Peter Ellis - Operations Manager for Brewery Training Australia and Calibre Training and Development (RTO #32394). “Craft breweries are screaming out for well trained staff who are knowledgeable and skilled, not only in hospitality and bar skills but who also understand the workings and processes of the brewery, enabling them to multi-task as and when needed. Our courses provide these skills, additionally allowing a pathway for those wishing to embark on a career as a head brewer and/or operations manager.”

The Queensland Government’s Certificate 3 Guarantee program supports eligible individuals to complete their first post-school Certificate III qualification and Year 12 graduates to transition into work, by providing access to free TAFE in high priority qualifications. The free TAFE initiative is available for Year 12 graduates who completed in 2019 and undertake the training by 31 December 2020. Brewery Training Australia is delivering tailored microbrewery training, where graduates will receive a nationally recognised accredited certificate in FBP30117 Certificate III in Food Processing (Micro-Brewery) and FBP30117 Certificate III in Food Processing (Brew Pub).  Eligibility is largely based around a participant’s prior academic record, as to whether they have already completed a Nationally Accredited Certificate III or higher.

“All courses are delivered in well-known and respected operational micro-breweries. These include: Helios Brewing Company, Slipstream Brewing Company, White Brick Brewing; 3 Eagles Brewing; Palling Brothers Brewery and Bacchus Brewery. The content has been developed by industry professionals for specific industry outcomes to be obtained and the practical, hands on component of the courses instil a solid skills base from which to launch into the industry be it with part-time work or indeed a full time career,” explains Peter Ellis. “Participants will gain a fundamental knowledge of food safety guidelines and procedures, including how to monitor food quality programs and contribute to work health and safety practices, wort production, fermentation, beer maturation, filtration, labelling, packaging, cleaning and sustainable work practices .Additional to the brewery component Brew Pub participants are also trained in hospitality disciplines including Responsible Service of Alcohol.”

Leveraging off the Queensland Government’s Craft Brewing Strategy, Brewery Training Australia launched in 2019 and has already delivered and achieved some amazing milestones. To start, they were the first Brewery Training Provider to deliver Microbrewery and Brew Pub accredited training in Queensland, with participants undertaking the training ‘hands on’ in an operational commercial brewery.  Secondly, they are the only Brewery Training Provider in Australia to partner with a High School to develop and deliver, Microbrewery training from the Redcliffe State High school’s very own licenced micro-brewery – 3 Eagles Brewing.

All courses are delivered in well-known and respected operational micro-breweries across Australia.

“Brewery Training Australia is also able to formalise an employee’s existing skills and knowledge into an accredited qualification. This process sees the training completed on-site with limited disruption to the business. Often a combination of Federal and State Government training incentives can be accessed by eligible employees helping to offset the costs of training,” said Peter Ellis.

2020 is shaping up to be an exciting year for the micro and craft brewing industry, providing multiple opportunities for employment. Brewery Training Australia looks forward to providing excellent standards of training, education and consultative services to support continued growth in Queensland and throughout Australia.
