Mums are being encouraged to ditch the traditional New Year's Resolutions this year and instead embrace a brand new one – putting a "Mumcation" on the to-do list.

The most popular New Year's Resolutions usually involve losing weight, exercising and cutting back on alcohol. However, Ali Saoirse from Ripple Massage believes that taking some time out and getting away with girlfriends can have just as many health benefits for tired, overstressed Mums.

“Mums often put everyone else first," Ali says. "A study by Healthy Woman Organisation found that Mums put themselves fifth on the list of people they look after, ranking themselves lower than time spent looking after children, relatives and even the family pet.

“Other studies show that Mums take only 30 minutes for 'me time' each day. This can lead to burnout and tired frazzled Mums with low energy.

“At Ripple, we have noticed over the last two years, a large spike in Mums getting away for a Mumcation. Usually lasting a night or two, it is becoming more common for Mums of all ages to book accommodation and escape with their girlfriends for some much need downtime.

“When I chat to Mums on the phone, so many say just how much they need this time away from kids and husbands. You can tell from their voice they are just exhausted and booking in a few nights away to de-stress is like a little light on the horizon for them. A Mumcation is a fantastic New Year’s Resolution for Mums with kids of all ages.

“At Ripple, we are often booked to provide the mobile beauty and massage pampering that is usually included in these girls’ weekends away.

“Massage is one of the best and quickest ways to reduce the physical load of stress on the body as it reduces cortisol, the stress hormone.

“Studies have also shown massage can relax on a psychological level as well by increasing the 'feel good' dopamine hormone in the brain,” Ali continues. “Including massage in your time away can be a great short cut to making the most of your time to relax.”
