Thursday, October 3rd, 2019 - Ponderings Media

With World Sight Day coming up on October 10th, Australian digital magazine Ponderings is releasing Ponderings Radio, a free audio article platform inspired by the Chief Editor's vision impairment journey. This new revolutionary adaptation will be accessible for free on both it's online written platform and Buzzsprout.

For Chief Editor Kirsten Macdonald, this unique addition to the grass-roots magazine rings true from a personal level.

In 2012, Mrs Macdonald was diagnosed with a rare aneurysm, undergoing neurosurgery which resulted in blindness and learning how to walk again.

"After neurosurgery, I was left blind. Eventually, these nerves healed, and my vision returned to 90% in one eye. Audio is not a 'taken for granted' non-conscious function, it becomes your whole world. Having access to the same information and restoration of normality with basic things has a layered impact, emotionally, physically and practically.”

"I always knew we would contribute in some way. We have raised money in marathons and events, but this is an actual change to the way we present digital media and provide access. We are so pleased to provide this format for our readers."

"Being blind means your other senses kick in, and you become almost superhuman with other sensory functions. You are not less than, you are more than. So why shouldn't the superhuman contingent of the community be able to listen to Ponderings?"

According to an online survey conducted by Vision 2020 Australia, National Disability Servies (NDS) and the Australian Blindness Forum (ABF), there are over 575,000 blind and vision-impaired people in Australia. Despite these statistics, there is a lack of low vision services nationally.

Audio stories are also the trend of the future. The 2017-18 Global Audiobook Trends and Statistics shows that the boom in audiobook and podcast industry is due to three advantages:

  • You can multitask while listening,
  • It is portable,
  • And people enjoy being read to.

All walks of life deserve access to a story, and may they be empowered by doing so.
