Julian Assange will today face the commencement of his extradition hearing to the United States.

Assange has been transfered to the hospital ward of the notorious Belmarsh Prison in London which was purpose built to hold terrorists and serious offenders.

Julian Assange’s Swedish lawyer Per Samuelson has told the press that “Assange’s health situation on Friday was such that it was not possible to conduct a normal conversation with him.”

Melbourne supporters of WikiLeaks are today picketing the British Consul to express their support for Assange and demand his release.

Jacob Grech from Melbourne 4 WikiLeaks said today that "Julian Assange has a strong connection with Melbourne: as a student at Melbourne Uni he set up our first public access internet service and assisted VicPol with their investigations into the darker side of the internet."

"WikiLeaks was born in Melbourne and maintains strong associations with our city"

Melbourne 4 WikiLeaks is today calling for his immediate release.
