YourDC celebrates its third birthday this week as the No. 1 cloud data centre in South Australia, saying demand for its services reflect an optimistic economic outlook for the State.
With customers as diverse as Uniti Wireless, Flinders University, Adelaide Airport, MyBudget, Drakes Supermarkets, SAGE Automation, Beach Energy and Westminster College, the company has climbed the global rankings maintained by the premier cloud research service Cloudscene, to No. 5 in Oceania.
Co-founder and Chief Executive Scott Hicks puts the business’s success down to growing demands for privacy and data sovereignty in an increasingly mobile world.
“The corporate and consumer world revolves around mobile services,” Mr Hicks said.
“This creates a massive surge of demand for data, and with each new technology that demand will only get higher. Over the next decade, increased automation, artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things will continue to pervade our lives.
“These represent the next technology revolution and a huge economic transformation that will be enabled by the kind of secure cloud infrastructure that YourDC provides.”
Led by Mr Hicks and Greg Siegele, a consortium of more than 30 prominent Adelaide business people invested in YourDC. Their shared vision was to build the next generation of IT infrastructure which is essential for the South Australian economy to thrive.
Today, YourDC Edinburgh Parks is a vital asset for South Australia's economic future – an ICT hub designed to accommodate $800 million of critical infrastructure and services. This world class data centre plays a key role in supporting government agencies, large scale commercial clients and the Defence sector.
“We set out to give YourDC a competitive advantage by becoming the only TIA942 Rated 3 facility in Australia,” Mr Hicks said. “Within months of launch, we had achieved that goal, and today we are the only data centre in Australia to pass the 2,600 criteria to achieve TIA-942 Rating 3.
“Our Edinburgh Parks data centre has the highest levels of efficiency and redundancy, and as a result of the SA Government’s Building Upgrade Finance program, is powered 100% by solar and other renewable energies. It’s an enabler for South Australian business, and will support the delivery of more than $1B of services at full capacity.”
YourDC operates a second data centre at Hawthorn as backup to Edinburgh Parks.
“YourDC’s strategy of creating North-South redundancy via its second data centre at Hawthorn means we can offer an unprecedented disaster recovery installation,” Mr Hicks said.
“Our entire team is committed to our local community, with our founders choosing to reinvest substantial personal funds from their previous successful ventures directly into South Australia.”
Consultancy firm Frost & Sullivan forecasts that the Australian data centre services market will grow by 12.4 per cent a year to 2022.
“Much of this growth will be driven by regular internet users who want to transact with government and businesses digitally,” Mr Hicks said.
“The presence of our data centre capability drives considerable economic benefits including attracting further major cluster investment in ICT industries and infrastructure, increased opportunities for direct and indirect employment, demand for highly skilled employees and effective workforce development.”
