Co-founder of the world’s most successful corporate entertainment act and operatic phenomenon ‘The Three Waiters’* and long-term Warringah resident, Darryl Lovegrove, will run as an independent candidate in the seat of Warringah at this year’s Federal election.
Lovegrove wants to offer himself as the ‘small L’ Liberal centrist which he believes most constituents wish they had. He sees himself as a ‘sensible centrist’ but ‘socially progressive’.
“The growing anti-Abbott sentiment amongst the community is just extraordinary – much of it coming from traditional Liberal supporters,” says Lovegrove.
“It could easily be argued there isn’t a politician more out of touch with the core values and beliefs of the majority of their constituents than Tony Abbott.”
“Most people here believe climate change is real and that Australia must honour its commitments to massively reduce carbon emissions. Amongst other things, this means investing heavily in renewable energy sources which will inevitably help safeguard our environment. The science argument is almost irrelevant now as renewables have passed the tipping point in cost. It just simply doesn’t make sense economically to develop new coal mines and coal fire power stations.
"I'm also advocating for an end to mandatory detention, heavy regulatory changes to live sheep exports or banning it all together, the Beaches Link tunnel, fair funding for schools and affordable day-care," says Lovegrove.
“The fact that 75% of the electorate voted in favour of same-sex marriage while Mr Abbott led the ‘No’ campaign was extremely telling,” says Lovegrove. “The pain and anguish to the LGBT community caused by the 2017 plebiscite was a disgrace and our representative was one of its chief proponents.
“The fascinating counter point, however, is the lack of appetite for having Bill Shorten as the next Prime Minister.
“This has opened a big opportunity for an independent candidate - someone relatable with worldly life and business experience to serve an electorate hungry for someone who embraces the future and shares their core values and aspirations. That’s exactly what I would bring to the table.”
Lovegrove relishes the opportunity to become a Federal Member of Parliament.
“I’ve always been a political junkie. Politics is the greatest sport. The clash of ideas has always fascinated me. Our political process isn’t serving us well currently and it’s having serious consequences on quality decision making. I’d love the opportunity to go in and shake things up a bit. You can only really do that as an independent,” he says.
Lovegrove is a proud Dad of two teenage girls and currently lives in Mosman.
*Lovegrove is the co-creator of the most successful corporate entertainment act in the world, The Three Waiters (13,000 shows, seen in 90 countries). With offices established in Sydney, London and New York, the singing waiters act was put together on the back of the worldwide success of The Three Tenors. In 2003, Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras (The Three Tenors) gave The Three Waiters a standing ovation following a performance at a post concert event given in their honour in Bath, England. It is the recipient of many international event industry awards.
After selling his share in the act in 2009, Lovegrove formed Lovegrove Entertainment which has produced shows such as The Leading Men and Jersey to Motown. In 2012 Darryl & Harmony, a duo formed with daughter Harmony, won the Australian Event Awards Entertainer of the Year.
Previously Lovegrove was a cast member of the original Australian productions of Les Miserables (1988/89) and Chess (1990) before taking over the role of ‘Jesus’ from John Farnham in the 1994/95 Australia and New Zealand theatrical tour of Jesus Christ Superstar opposite Jon Stevens and Deni Hines. He went on to play John Lennon in Looking through a Glass Onion and toured Australasia with Sarah Brightman in The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber.
Lovegrove is now a noted motivational business keynote speaker having spoken at over 100 conferences in nine countries including the world famed Million Dollar Round Table (MDRT) in the USA. He also hosts many gala, charity and awards events where he performs songs and arias from his extensive career.
