Resilience at work means getting into the upward spiral

What resilience really means is having the ability to manage any challenges that might come your way. It means being able to do so with a sense of calm and tact, while being true to your own values.

In her latest article, Australian resilience and wellbeing expert Gina Brooks gives us an insight into the Downward Spiral - and how to shift yourself to start moving back upwards again.

‘What is the downward spiral? Imagine it as being the beginning of something that feels really big and horrible, when really it’s just how you’re thinking,’ Gina explained. ‘Imagine you’re feeling stressed or anxious. Then you have to give a presentation at work, but because you’re already headed downwards, you take the feedback kind of personally. Then you think about it for the rest of the day. You tell your partner about it that evening, and by the time you go to bed, you’re thinking that you don’t really want to do any more presentations at work. That’s what a downward spiral looks like.‘

In contrast, the Upward Spiral is a reinforcing spiral of positive mood.

’To get into the upward spiral, you really have to work on your own resilience first,’ says Gina. ‘But there are a number of ways in which you can nurture and grow your own resilience. That’s what this article is all about.‘
