Connection and Wellbeing Australia (CAWA) is spreading the word that Suicide First Aid exists and that awareness and intervention training can help save lives.

“As a community, everyone knows about learning physical first aid, but there is a gap around mental health and wellbeing. Our training courses are focussed on giving anyone in the community the skills and confidence to help someone who is having thoughts of suicide,” says CAWA founder Bella Broadway.

“Training is not just for healthcare professionals, anyone can learn the skills that can help save a life.”

Bella believes all workplaces should offer information around suicide prevention.

“CAWA’s goal is to educate people and let them know that ‘suicide first aid’ exists.  We want to build a suicide safer community.”

CAWA provides three core services - Suicide Prevention Workshops, Organisational Capacity Building and Inclusivity and Diversity Workshops.

“We provide a safe space for people to access evidence-based workshops that help them develop the skills they need to support clients, colleagues, loved ones and other community members. We also offer a suite of capacity-building workshops to ensure that your teams are diverse and resilient.

“I encourage everyone to talk about suicide – it doesn’t make things worse to talk about it.  Actually, it’s quite the opposite - it can mean life-saving conversations,” Bella says.

In recognition of the positive difference the business is making to communities, CAWA was awarded the Best New Business award in the Belmont and Western Australian Small Business Awards in 2017.

Additionally, Bella was shortlisted as a finalist for the Suicide Prevention Australia LiFE Award for Excellence in Suicide Prevention (Community Development).
